Clear communication is key in life, in fact, it is essential. Communicating clearly can make the difference between telling someone verbally â€Å"I love it!† in a joyous tone when receiving a gift you enjoy or saying, â€Å"I†¦love ...it...† with a look of grimace, when you found out the present was a disappointment. Communication has two main factors: Verbal and Nonverbal. Verbal Communication is messages one uses to relay information to another person through words or language. This type of communication can be a face-to-face interaction or may use channels such as email or written letters to communicate a message. Nonverbal communication are messages that are not spoken but conveyed through one’s body language. Unspoken messages can include:†¦show more content†¦After making this comment, my bother-in-law who is Mexican, just stared at me and said harshly â€Å"What? Why would you do that?† I was confused by his comment, I could not un derstand why he was upset with me. Apparently, Hale in Spanish is slang for drug run; needless to say I was speechless. My brother-in-law actually thought I was going to take my sons to acquire drugs. Miscommunication was definitely present during Christmas dinner, however, messages are not always verbal, and in fact 90% of communication is nonverbal. When I was in high school I saw this guy whom I never met start to wave at me on campus, not wanting to be rude I waved back. After I waved he started to mouth something I couldn’t understand and made a motion like he was tossing a football. Out loud I said â€Å"I’m sorry, what that was, I don’t understand?† The guy started to laugh and pointed to the person behind me; he was not talking to me. I was completely embarrassed. After the waving incident I make sure that should someone wave at me and I do not recognize the person that I look behind me. In addition, nonverbal miscommunication can be misinterpreted without ones knowledge. I tend to fold my arms when I sit down and talk to someone. Personally, I find the â€Å"Indian Style† arm cross quite comfortable; however, I have learned that folding my arms can cause nonverbal miscommunication. In today’s society we are constantly being presented with choices that require our judgement on whether we believe that choice is ethical or not. Most of these choices are not things that we will likely ever be confronted with, and yet we are compelled to judge the moral actions of others. Euthanasia has come to the fore-front of these moral and ethical issues. Euthanasia is defined as â€Å"the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma† and is derived from the Greek words eu and thanatos, meaning â€Å"easy death†. There has been much controversy throughout history as to whether euthanasia should be legal or is ethical. In ancient times, doctors have two roles in society; to heal and to kill. Plato said â€Å"Mentally and physically ill persons should be left to death; they do not have the right to live† (New Zealand resource for life). By using strong characterization and dramatic imagery, William Faulkner introduces us to Miss Emily Grierson in â€Å"A Rose for Emily†. The product of a well-established, but now fallen family, Emily plays common role found in literature- a societal outcast, who earns her banishment from society through her eclectic behavior and solitary background. Often living in denial and refusing to engage with others, Emily responds to her exile by spending the remainder of her life as a mysterious recluse that the rest of society is more content to ignore rather than break social customs to confront her. Because her behavior and reclusive nature has made her unacceptable in her community’s eyes, Emily counters their attitude with a refusal to live in their presence. In many ways, they tried to bridge the gap or assist her, but each time she refused them. This is first seen when her father dies and people begin to feel sorry for her. The ladies gathered to offer help and sympathy, but are denied by Emily when she swears that her father is still alive. Later, when the town starts free postal delivery, Emily does not allow them to put a mail receptacle or address numbers on her home. Emily is physically refusing to let the outside world contact her. Then there is the debacle with her taxes. As the newer generation tries to rectify the former mayor’s decision to discharge her taxes, she refuses to answer their tax statement and later a personal letter from the mayor. Finally, the Board of Alderman visits her house, and tries to explain why she has to pay her taxes. She refuses to listen to their reasoning and she quickly dismisses them.
